When you want to stop an outbreak of hives, identifying and eliminating the cause is always the easiest way to control the itching, burning and welts. Many medical and natural approaches claim they can assist you in managing the symptoms. If you need to learn how to get rid of hives, some of these treatments say all you have to do is use one of the following.

Common Treatments

Antihistamines

The most common treatment is antihistamines. They reduce or eliminate the effects of histamine produced by allergies. Since histamine affects the body quickly, this medical treatment works best as a preventative measure.

Antihistamines come in many varieties of pills and liquids, in both prescription and over-the-counter medications. The most popular non-prescription drug is Benadryl. The downside to antihistamines is they can cause drowsiness, which in some cases could be dangerous.

Corticosteroids

If you have a severe outbreak, physicians may prescribe an oral corticosteroid such as Prednisone, but this treatment method is often temporary due to the side effects. In addition, an outbreak typically lasts longer than you can take corticosteroids safely.

While there are other, safer steroid alternatives, scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness is lacking.

Creams and Lotions

While discovering the best treatments for hives is important to prevent continuous outbreaks, prescription-strength and over-the-counter topical solutions offer a way to control the symptoms.

Creams and lotions work by numbing nerve endings. This reduces the itching and makes the welts more bearable to live with. However, not all creams relieve the itching. While ingredients such as camphor, menthol, pramoxine and dipenhydramine do control itching, cortisone creams do not.

Home Remedies

Like creams and lotions, many home remedies for hives can help alleviate the nagging symptoms. Soaking in an Epsom salt bath, dabbing your hives with vinegar, putting ice cubes in a baggie and applying the ice directly to the hives have all been sworn to be useful methods of controlling the itching and discomfort.

Many individuals have even gone on drastic elimination diets in order to avoid any food or beverage triggers. When you begin to add in potential environmental issues, perfumes and personal care products, the list of substances to avoid can be exhaustive.

Getting Rid of Hives Naturally

While all of these medical and natural methods can help alleviate hives symptoms for several hours, none of them addresses the root of the problem. You can spend your lifetime chasing after allergies and sensitivities, yet never stumble onto the real reason why you have hives.

Dr. Gary M. Levin is a medical doctor and surgeon who teaches at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine as well as treats patients at his own clinic. Through natural methods, he has been able to permanently cure or dramatically improve his patients’ conditions.

According to Dr. Levin, an overactive immune system is why you have hives, so that is what he focuses on. While allergens do cause the immune system to go into overdrive, treating your immune system is the real solution to the problem of how to get rid of hives.

Dr. Levin has recently released an eBook titled “Natural Urticaria (Hives) & Angioedema Treatment“. The eBook covers all the information you need in order to significantly reduce your hives symptoms using only natural and safe methods.
